The Kazmaier in Wisconsin

I am very glad that the 5th Kazmaier line that I started researching was not founded by another Andreas Kazmaier. In Wisconsin we find Kazmeiers - yes, again the spelling had changed - all originally descending from a man named J. Friedrich Kazmaier. I assume the J. could be for Johann or Johannes as that was another very common name in Württemberg at that time. We find him and his wife Louise Ruckwied buried on Schleswig cemetery in Rockville, Manitowoc County, Wisconsin. Until now it remains unknown where J. Friedrich was born, assumably he came as well from the known area in Württemberg. I am sure I will find out soon.

Louise Kazmaier, nee Ruckwied, came with her parents to Wisconsin in 1838. They were among the first settlers in the area. She married J. Friedrich Kazmaier in the early 1850s and they had five children:

1. Maria Agnes Kazmeier, born 5 July 1855 in New York, died 12 December 1936 in Elkhart Lake, Sheboygan, Wisconsin. She married Wilhelm Gottlieb Graf.

2. Anna Kazmeier, born April 1860; died 28 Sep 1950. She married Jacob Arnold on Nov. 25, 1883 in Schleswig and they had 10 children.

Mrs. Jacob Arnold, 92, former resident of Kiel, passed away Tuesday afternoon at Menominee Falls where she had been residing with a son, Milton, and a daughter, Mrs. Anna Arnold.

Nee Anna Kazmeier, she was born near Kiel and lived in the vicinity many years. She has 10 children surviving her, all widely scattered throughout the United States. Her husband preceded her in death.

Funeral services will be held Saturday morning at Menominee Falls and interment will be made Saturday afternoon in the Rockville cemetery near Kiel. She has numerous friends and relatives in this vicinity.

Jacob Arnold, aged 82, former town of Schleswig resident, passed away at his home in Menomonee Falls Saturday morning at 1 o'clock. He was born January 8, 1859 in the town of Schleswig. On November 27, 1883 he was married to Anna Kazmeier of this city, and for a number of years lived in the town of Schleswig. Twenty-two years ago he moved to Menomonee Falls. Survivors are the widow, three daughters, and five sons, Miss Louis Arnold of San Francisco, California, Mrs. Anna Arnold of Rib Lake, Mrs. Sophia Cosgrave of Oakland, California, Walter, Arthur and Milton of Menomonee Falls, Harold of Knoxville, Tennessee, James of Springfield, Kansas, and Fred of Elmhurt, Kansas; 21 grandchildren, two great-grandchildren and one brother, Philip, of Kiel. Funeral services were conducted Tuesday morning at Menomonee Falls, with interment in the Rockville cemetery.

3. Louise Kazmaier, born between 1865 and 1870.

4. Friedrich Kazmeier, died in Bryant, Brazos, TX, USA.

5. Adam Kazmeier, born 2 August 1864 in Kiel, Manitowoc County; died 1 January 1936 in Kiel, Sheboygan County. He married Clara A. Hedler.

From the Sheboygan Press January 2, 1936:

"Adam Kazmeier, 71, who has been ill during the past two months, died at his home here, 1141 N. Sixth street, New Year's Day morning. [...] Mr. Kazmeier was born August 2, 1864, the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Frederick Kazmeier, on a farm in the town of Schleswig, 1 ½ miles southeast of Kiel, where he spent his boyhood. On September 11, 1889, he married Miss Clara Hedler, also of the town of Schleswig, and the couple lived on the Kazmeier farm homestead until 1914, when they built their home in Kiel, where they have lived ever since."

It shall be Adam, J. Friedrich's youngest son, who carries on the name Kazmeier in Wisconsin. Friedrich Kazmeier, his older brother moved to Texas at some point in time. He married an unknown woman in Bryan and had at least one son: Frederick William Kazmeier, born 31 July 1890; died 1969 in Bryan, Brazos County, TX. In Bryan we find "Kazmeier Plaza", a street named after one of them.

On 11 September 1889 Adam Kazmeier married Clara A. Hedler, born 27 September 1872; died 11 October 1948 in Elkhart Lake, Sheboygan, daughter of Franz Hedler and Augusta Teschner. They had four children:

1. Cora Hilda Kazmeier, born 19 April 1893 in Kiel, Manitowoc, died 17 January 1989 in El Cajon, CA, USA. She married on 20 October 1921 in St.Peter`s United Church of Christ, Kiel, Sheboygan, Benjamin Henry Conrad, the son of John Conrad and Johanna Becker. He was born 26 July 1897 in Russell, Sheboygan, WI, USA and died on 6 February 1980 in Elkhart Lake, Sheboygan. Cora and her husband operated the Green View Farm and Hatchery in rural Elkhart Lake for 55 years. He died 6th February, 1980.

2. Oscar O. Kazmeier, born 24 September 1891 in Kiel, Manitowoc, died 27 February 1977 in Kiel, Manitowoc. He married Mathilde Roeck and they had three girls, Marie Gladys, Betty and Ruth C.

From the Manitowoc Herald Times, Monday, September 16, 1940:

"Marie Gladys Kazmeier, 19, Kiel route 1, died early this morning shortly after a car in which she was riding left the highway at the intersection of Highways 149 and 32 and crashed into an embankment on the west side of the highway. Marie Gladys Kazmeier was born September 19, 1920 in Kiel, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Oscar Kazmeier. She attended the Kiel public schools and was graduated from the Kiel high school in June of 1938. She was valedictorian of her class. For the past year and a half Miss Kazmeier was employed in the office of Dr. D.F. Nauth in Kiel. She was organist of the Bethel M.E. church at Meggers and the St. Peter's Reform church at Kiel."

3. Harry Kazmeier, born 1894 and died the same year in Kiel, Sheboygan.

4. Frederick Kazmeier.
