The Kazmaier in New York

It may appear strange to most but again it was a man named Andreas Kazmaier who emigrated to the USA in the mid 1850s. He appears the first time in the town Lewis in Lewis county in the state of New York. In the 1855 census the 19 year old Andreas appears to be living with the Peare family and was registered on their farm as a labourer. The census collector recorded his name wrongly as Katsmire which is not surprising as that would have been as the probably non-English speaking Andreas would have pronounced his name. Most probably his reading and writing skills were not too good either and he was not even able to correct the census collector. However, Andrew, as he will soon be known as, was born as Andreas Kazmaier on 19 February 1836 in the little German town Honau in the then Kingdom of Württemberg.

His father Andreas Kazmaier, the son of Johann Georg Kazmaier (*11 Mar 1773, +12 Mar 1839) and Catharina Barbara Hageloch, was born 12 December 1802 in Honau and there he died 4 September 1857. He married Maria Magdalena Stahlecker on 3 November 1829 in Honau. She was born 28 June 1807 in Honau and died 10 September 1857 in Honau, being the daughter of Andreas Stahlecker and Regina Catharina Werner.

Andrew was the third of eight children of Andreas Kazmaier and Maria Magdalena Stahlecker:

1. Gottlieb Kazmaier, born 6 April 1830 in Honau, Württemberg, Germany

2. Rosina Kazmaier, born 6 March 1834 in Honau, Württemberg, Germany.

3. Andreas Kazmaier, born 19 February 1836 in Honau, Württemberg, Germany; died 14 November 1910 in West Leyden, New York USA. He married (1) Margaret Eckhardt, (2) Adeline Eckhardt and (3) Gertrude Miles

4. Martin Kazmaier, born 4 August 1839 in Honau, Württemberg, Germany; died 30 April 1855 in Honau, Württemberg, Germany.

5. Regina Katharina Kazmaier, born 16 February 1841 in Honau, Württemberg, Germany.

6. Johann Jakob Kazmaier, born 11 August 1842 in Honau, Württemberg, Germany; died 22 December 1842 in Honau, Württemberg, Germany.

7. Jakobina Kazmaier, born 16 March 1844 in Honau, Württemberg, Germany. She married Carl Adolf Friedrich Brutscher.

8. Anna Maria Kazmaier, born 25 July 1846 in Honau, Württemberg, Germany; died in Paris, France.

Unfortunately Andrew's first two wives died young, Margaret, born 1838, died 1861 probably very short after their marriage. They didn't have any children. Adaline, born 1841, she probably was Andrew's first wife's Margaret's sister, died 1869 and they had one daughter, born 1865 named Adaline as well.

Andrew settled in West Leyden in 1854. Originally a farmer, merchant and cheese maker, they farmed on 150 acres in West Leyden, he has been a member of the board of supervisors for 17 years, town clerk and highway commissioner.

Names that are hard to pronounce, at least for English speakers, appear to change quite often .... Andrews name changed twice during his lifetime and by the time of his death it changed again to Katsmeyer .... and therefore his sons carried this name forward.

Together with his third wife Gertrude Miles, born 1848 in Germany and died 1915 in West Leyden, New York, Andrew had six sons:

1. Roney Katsmayer was born 13 July 1872 in West Leyden, New York and died 6 Feb 1935.

2. William W. Katsmayer was born 1874 in West Leyden, New York, and died 1938 in Lewis County, New York. He married Rose E. Hayes.

3. Frank J. Katsmayer was born 8 September 1877 in Lewis County, New York and died in June 1967 in Buffalo, New York. He married Helena S. Myers.

4. Charles Harold Katsmayer was born 1879 in West Leyden, New York, and died 24 July 1923. He married Mary G. Wade. Mary died in February 1919.

Charles and Mary had one daughter, Elizabeth, born about 1914.

5. Andrew Katsmayer Jr. was born 1880 in West Leyden, New York, and died 9 May 1961 in Lewis County, New York. He married Emma Schoff.

6. Lewis F. Katsmayer was born 1885 in Lewis County, New York, and died 22 April 1962 in Erie, New York.

Jakobina Kazmaier, Andrew's younger sister, born 16 March 1844 in Honau, married on 25 November 1869 in Tübingen, Württemberg, Germany, Carl Adolf Friedrich Brutscher, born 4 May 1841 in Tübingen, son of Franz Carl Brutscher and Louise Heinrike Rosina Kümmerle.

Children of Jakobina Kazmaier and Carl Adolf Friedrich Brutscher were as follows:

1. Carl Brutscher, born 1870 in Tübingen, Württemberg, Germany; died 2 Mar 1940 in Syracuse, Onondaga, NY. He married Christina Rausch.

2. Pauline Brutscher, born 16 Mar 1871 in Tübingen, Württemberg, Germany; died 26 Jul 1941. She married Lewis Ernest Roser.

3. Matilda Jacobine Brutscher, born 25 Jul 1874 in Tübingen, Württemberg, Germany; died 15 Nov 1948 in West Turin, Lewis, NY. She married Henry H. Bauer.

4. Emma Brutscher, born in Tübingen, Württemberg, Germany.

Carl Brutscher, the oldest son of Jakobina Kazmaier and Carl Adolf Friedrich Brutscher, Andrew Kazmaier's nephew, obviously followed him to the US in the late 1880s.  Finally, Andrew's nieces Pauline and Matilda in followed 1892. The girls arrived in 1892 to live with their brother Carl in Syracuse for a short time before they moved to West Leyden to live with their uncle Andrew Kazmaier.
